Las Question Tags son preguntas muy cortas que se colocan después de una frase.

La idea con estas preguntas cortas es o averiguar que habías entendido bien, o para buscar la aprobación del interlocutor o expresar una emoción como sorpresa o shock.

Las Question Tags existen en español también, pero es distinto. Estas frases equivalen a: ¿verdad?, ¿no es verdad?, ¿no?, ¿no es así? ¿en serio?

Ya que estamos todos celebrando el gran día de Saint Patrick, queremos proponeros unas expresiones típicas irlandesas. Cuando sales a tomar tu cerveza Guinness, vas a poder dejar tus amigos anglohablantes con la boca abierta con tu nivelazo de inglés.

Insultos:

Wagon – Not in fact a trailer attached to a moving vehicle. If an Irish person calls you a ‘wagon’, it means you are not a nice person in any way. Usually in reference to females.

Chancer – A ‘chancer’ is someone who ‘chances their arm’ a lot, or pretends to be someone they’re not, or tries to fool people into doing something. Generally a risky character.

Thick – If somebody is referred to as ‘thick’, they are stupid or unintelligent.

Manky – If something is manky, it is disgusting, dirty, horrible, etc. Usually used in reference to bad food or dirty clothes etc. rather than people or places.

Exclamaciones:

That’s class – If something is ‘class’, it’s excellent or really really good.

Up to Ninety – If someone is ‘up to ninety’, ‘going ninety’, or anything to do with ninety, this usually means that they are extremely busy or something is extremely chaotic.

Deadly – Contrary to what you might think, if something is ‘deadly’ it isn’t extremely dangerous, it’s actually really really great.

Scarlet – ‘I was Scarlet’ or ‘Scarlet for you’ is what Irish people (usually from Dublin) say when something horribly embarrassing happens, referring to being red-faced.

Expresiones coloquiales:

Acting the maggot – If you’re acting the maggot, you’re messing around, being mischievous, and generally causing mayhem or irritating people

Make a bags of it – To make a bags of something is to mess it up entirely, do it completely the wrong way, or fail miserably.

Craic – This does not in any way refer to illegal drugs! ‘Craic’ is a catch all term that usually means ‘fun’. If something was ‘good craic’ or you did something ‘for the craic’, you did it just for kicks. It can also be used as a question such as ‘what’s the craic?’ which basically means ‘how’s it going?’ or ‘what’s up?’, or ‘any craic with…’ which means ‘what happened with…’

Donkey’s Years – While nobody actually knows just how long a donkey’s year is, it is apparently believed to be a very long time by the Irish! If you haven’t seen someone in ‘donkey’s years’, you haven’t seen them in several years, even decades.

Todos estamos obsesionados con las series en inglés, ¿no? Eso no quiere decir que también no haya series españolas que nos molan, pero bueno, después de 1 una hora de «Tu cara me suena» no será mal variar un poco. ¿Por qué es bueno ver series en inglés? Porque al final, te metes, aunque sea por unas horas, en un ambiente de inmersión. Estás trabajando el oído sin levantarte del sofá. También, aprenderás palabras coloquiales y jerga actual de los países anglohablantes. Eso sí está guay. Sabemos que dentro el mundo académico, igual no tenemos mucha flexibilidad en cuanto a los temas que tratamos. Por lo tanto, aparte de las clases en Idiomas Seif donde puedes trabajar la parte speaking, la gramática y las dudas que tienes, las series sirven para complementar el aprendizaje del idioma.

¡Happy Halloween! Halloween es un festivo de origen gaélico, sin embargo, se ha convertido en un día popular por todas partes del mundo. Antiguamente, era un día con una connotación religiosa, pero ahora, es más comercial, y la gente se disfraza de brujas, o enfermeras sexys, o personajes de series etc. Es una buena excusa para comer demasiados caramelos, salir a la calle con un disfraz de Juego de Tronos, y sentirnos como niños otra vez.

No seríamos una academia de inglés sin aprovechar para daros una oportunidad para mejorar y practicar el inglés. Te dejamos un poema de Edgar Allen Poe, el rey de horror. ¡Dinos después si te ha gustado!

The Raven

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—

Ah, siempre escuchamos esto de «falso amigo» pero, ¿qué quiere decir exactamente? Un falso amigo se refiere a un cognado (falso). Cognados son palabras que comparten significado, como por ejemplo: televisión y television en inglés o sofá y sofa. ¿Todo bien hasta allí? Bueno, ¡a por ello!

Igual te estás pensando, ¿por qué es necesario estudiar los falsos cognados, es obvio, no? Incorrecto, amigos, aveces no es tan obvio. En seguido, os vamos a dar una chuleta para ir estudiando los cognados falsos más frecuentes. A veces en las academias típicas, se les olvidan tratar de estos temas porque lo toman por hecho que todo el mundo lo sepa. En Idiomas Seif, intentamos cubrir todas las dudas que os podáis surgir. ¡Vamos, ya!
